Trey Lance Has Shown Poise In The 49ers Locker Room

Entering his second year in the NFL, Trey Lance is staring down his first opportunity to be a starting quarterback. However, Lance does not have the job won quite yet. Jimmy Garoppolo has not been traded despite the rumors. This has left the door open for Garoppolo to return to San Francisco. Even with all the talk surrounding the 49ers quarterback situation, veterans have noticed Lance has yet to be rattled.

“Seeing him in the locker room now, I don’t really see a difference,” left tackle Trent Williams said on Tuesday, via Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. “He carries himself extremely well, which is why he’s here, why everyone is so high on him. We all know his attributes as a quarterback. But I think the way he carries himself, the way he holds his head, the way nothing ever rattles him, that’s his key feature and I think that will carry him a long way.”

Lance will be the starter sooner rather than later. The 49ers did not trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select a career backup third overall. The fact that Lance has the poise and mindset of a starting quarterback bodes well for him as he enters that role in the 2022 season.

In 2021, Lance saw limited opportunities. In six games, he threw for 603 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. This came off 71 pass attempts that yielded a 57% completion percentage. In 2022, he will play in more than six games, giving him the opportunity to show that he is an NFL-caliber quarterback.
